12-year-old boy drowns in Lagos community

A schoolboy has been reported to have drowned at a river in Majidun community, Lagos. The boy identified as Ezekiel Friday, 12, was said to have met his untimely death after he was lured by his friends to the river, reports say.

Investigations reveal that Friday was a JSS 1 student at the Ayobirin Secondary School located in the community.

According to a version of the incident by some community residents, the boy was allegedly pushed into the river by one of his friends. While another version, said the deceased, who could not swim, was sweet-talked into swimming when his legs got stuck to mud.

Residents say, Friday was reportedly abandoned by his friends as   one of them was said to have taken Ezekiel’s slippers home.

However, Friday’s mother raised an alarm when hier son was no where to be found.

Speaking to reporters after local divers conducted a search for the body, a family source said: “We rushed to the river and found his body there.

“We begged some local divers to help us bring it out but they demanded N40,000 which mama Friday could not afford.

“Some members of the community contributed N20,000 and handed over to the people before they brought out the body,” the source said.

However, friends of the deceased denied any knowledge of the where-about of Friday but some residents revealed the boys [including Friday] were seen going towards the river.

However, the body of the deceased was on Monday buried after some traditional rituals were performed.
