A member of the Nigerian Senate, Ben Murray-Bruce, has revealed why his colleague at the Upper Chambers, Senator Dino Melaye jumped out of a Police van.
Ben Murray-Bruce who represents Bayelsa-East constituency at the Senate, disclosed in a tweet on Monday that he was in the hospital to see Dino Melaye, a senator representing Kogi-West.
Murray-Bruce expressed his worries about Melaye’s ordeals, adding that, it is “very sad to hear what transpired.”
According to Murray-Bruce, Melaye is asthmatic and during his confrontation, “the police gassed him and he could barely breathe.”
“The tear-gassing of the senator wasn’t a one-off thing. Second time they gassed him [and] he had to force his way out of the vehicle.
“Dino literally escaped death,” Senator Murray-Bruce tweeted.
The incident led to Mr. Melaye’s eventual hospitalisation.
It will be recalled that Dino Melaye was apprehended by officers of the Nigerian immigration at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja on his way to Morocco. He however, escaped from the security personnel.
Later that day, police officers laid siege at his residence in Maitama, Abuja in an attempt to arrest him.
But the following morning, Melaye turned himself in to the authorities, who later moved him to a Special Anti-Robbery Squad facility at Guzape, Abuja.
According to sources, Melaye feared that he would be transported to Lokoja, the Kogi state capital for assassination, So he engaged the the security operatives in a brawl and managed to jump out of the moving van after it was double-crossed by unmarked vehicles.
